I am a bit confused about the crate?

We just got her last night (we were supposed to get her on Feb. 9th, but the owner was tired of the puppies and started handing them out early) I am estimating that she is about 6 1/2 weeks old and whines hysterically if left alone or put in the box. I understand that she misses her momma and has to get used to us, etc. My mom is going to watch her for me while I go and get the crate and stuff. I only went and bought food to get us through the night- last night. OK, my questions, you said to play with her every other hour, so are they supposed to be in the crate for the hour we are not playing, or should we let her run around in the kitchen some? And it was stated on one of the posts to let her whine but for how long before we pick her up or give her attention, I mean this morning I thought I was gonna shake to death after a half hour of it and she was soo upset. Could some one please clarify the process for me, as I got the puppies for dummies book from the library and that wasn't clear enough on the new puppy stuff. I know that I can't spoil her, but I don't want to mentally abuse her either. Not to mention that according to the book she is to young to be away from mom. And she's already pee peed in my bed last night after I gave up and took her out of the box at midnight after petting her int he box for two hours...
