Encode video library to smaller size?

I have a lot of videos that are about 170mb or 300mb each and I want to store them but they take too much space. So how do I encode them simply and to what format? I was thinking rmvb so they come out to about 80mb. I'd like a program that could encode quickly and do batch videos.
