Can white and black people date?

I'm mixed (white black) even though I don't necacairly look like either. At least that's what I was told back in Germany (were I grew up until I was thirteen) because my hair isn't all and greasy instead it's curly and wavy and brownish blonde and my skin isn't really dark like the africans. However when I came to the U.S.A. or more specifically the southeast everyone called me black instead of mixed. So last week I made a weird face at this guy who's my acquaintance (he's white) and my friend (he's white too) goes, "Dude she's flirting with you." Then he turns to me and goes, "he's white." To which for some reason instead of denying flirting with him which wasn't my original intent I say, "Oh, really I didn't know." Then after I "flirted" with him he's been a whole lot nicer to me. He kept smiling at me yesterday after school before my volleyball game and his football game (volleyball practices in the gym and football has to walk to and from the weight room and the locker room for some reason which you have to p through the gym to do this). Then this morning during cl at first he was really quiet like the rest of the cl then I asked how the game went and all the guys bombarded me with answers and he was talking a lot to me which he usually doesn't. So I might have a bit of a crush on him now and I was wondering. Would a white guy and a mixed or I guess "black" girl date in the south?
