How to give someone hope again?

I have a very close friend. I love her immensely but recently I have become overwhelmed with her depression. She has experienced some truly horrible things in her family of which it seems I only know a tiny bit. She is very angry and does not belive she will have any sucsses in relationships, career, family life and so on. She keep people at a distance because she feels like it is a matter of time before she satrts to hate them or they discard her. I see that there is beauty in good in her soul, and I know she loves me even if she cannot express it as most people do but I just have no clue how to help her. EverytimeI tryshe gets offended and deffensive and says I know nothing about how she feels. But when she cries and is at the verge I can not ignore what I see. I am afraid she might go to extremes. Can anyone who has experienced a simillar situation please help me. Please do not suggest sucide hotlines, or doctors because there is no power that will take her to contact these people.
